Have you ever had someone know you, but not say how? {Red looks somewhat miffed, to say the least; her arms are crossed, the fingers tightly clenched. Those who know about the wolf might recognize a little of it in her stance.]

Jeferson keeps saying he read about me; something about little red riding hood... but I think he thinks we've met.

[There's a pause, where Red licks her lips; hesitant. She's surprised to realize there's a part of her that doesn't want to ask this question - maybe she's afraid the answer will be no. But it's more than that. These people tried to kill her. Her people chased her from her home. But...]

If I change my deal... could I bring back everyone the wolf killed? Not just Peter?

[There's a certain new arrival plastered to Red's side as she knocks upon her inmate's door. A large snake, it's head rising up to the doorknob as if trying to peer inside to its new owner. Tail wagging furiously.]

Medusa?

Apologies to anyone who bore witness to my accidentally posting it in logs. ^^;

[Red is fidgeting a little; hopefully she's doing this right... And that Wanda's suggestion was a good one. Either way, there's no backing down no.]

I want to get Medusa a snake; an... Incredibly Deadly Viper.

It's nicer than it sounds.

[Basically, it's one of the nicest, most harmless imaginary creatures in the animal kingdom. With fangs]

[Red had to arrange herself hastily for this call; what with recently having... eaten. Tommy's alright; everyone's keeping quiet; she can even manage something of a smile - though she can't help but wonder if this is the Admiral's way of punishing her. It isn't as if her and Medusa have gotten along...

Still; she's her warden; she will do her best. Even if she can't quite keep the question from her voice...]

I... guess we should talk?

Is anyone there? [Red holds the communicator at an odd angle as she speaks to it, tapping gently at the screen. She still hasn’t figured out the "magic" that runs it.] I’m… everyone calls me Red.  [She clutches the red cloak tighter about her shoulders as she says that, as if afraid it'll be wrenched free at any moment.]

The Admiral said... [And there she trails off; still a little disoriented by her surroundings.]

Other Characters: Faith Lehane, Willow Rosenberg
Character Name: Red
Series: Once Upon a Time
Age: 23
From When?: The end of Red-Handed– where she flees her former town.

Inmate/Warden: Warden - at this point, she had just run away from the only home she’d ever known, leaving her with nowhere to go – and as of yet no one who really needed her. She had also just discovered that she was a werewolf, and had discovered so shortly after having eaten her boyfriend.

She would gladly make a deal to return him to life, and would be desperate to escape to a place where she wouldn’t hurt anybody, and could make up for what she had done.

Item: Her red cloak

Abilities/Powers:
Mundane abilities: Red is a good tracker (though this may in part stem from being a werewolf, as she’s always been able to track down what she wants.)
Having lived in a forest, Red knows basic woodsmanship – tracking, and hunting, mostly; from what we see in the show, she would know how to use a bow, and probably a crossbow as well.
Supernatural Powers: Red is a werewolf, changing only at the full moon, and the two days surrounding it. Her wolf form stands at about five feet tall, and she is about ten feet long from snout to bottom, excluding tail. They note that it takes several human footsteps to match one of her strides.

Her transformation is very extensive, including the disappearance and reappearance of her clothing. When the moon came up she would slip out of her window, and transform; when the sun rose, she would turn back into a human, walk back to her window, and crawl into bed; unaware of the entire thing. From her perspective, she had simply gone to sleep and woken up the next morning.

Her status as a werewolf has a genetic component – she inherited it from her mother, and her grandparents before her – but she can also turn another, this is separate from a bite – which will merely mark them; though the process has yet to be detailed.

Some werewolf abilities come through even in her human form, during the time of the full moon – whether in day or night, and even if the curse is blocked. More specifically, Red has shown herself capable of accessing enhanced senses – allowing her to hear an unconscious man’s hearbeat as if it were “hammering.”

The wolf has shown human-like intelligence, and an agenda of its own; although it is possible for Red to gain control of her other self, the two personalities currently remain distinct, and both we be addressed in the appropriate place below.

Though it is possible to kill the wolf with human weapons, it appears to take great effort; silver in particularly is useful, for its ability to knock the wolf out – although it leaves no wounds upon the wolf (as seen when she was struck at close range with a cross bow bolt, but showed no wounds upon returning to normal.)

Personality: Red is generally sweet, and willing to believe the best in others – as seen when she was willing to accept Snow’s fake name, realizing off the bat that the woman had no reason to trust her. She didn’t seem to mind that Snow had actually been stealing from her chicken coop, nor did she question the fact that the woman was clearly being chased down. She saw someone in need of help, and she offered it to them without reservation.

Part of this may have stemmed from the life she lived; growing up in a cottage, at the outskirts of a small town – relatively quiet outside of the wolf that hunted it every month – Red is used to a small selection of people who know each other, and who band together in order to survive. When seeing another in danger, her first thought was therefore not to question, but to bond.

It would be unwise to mistake Red’s occasional naivety for innocence, however, or her kind approach to Snow as a universally gentle outlook. Red’s view of the world was fundamentally affected by the wolf that haunted her town, causing family’s to lock their doors and bring out their crossbows, watching helplessly as a creature ate the livestock that provided for their livelihoods.

When she heard of a hunting party that wanted to take down the wolf, her first thought was to join them; and when she later found their torn apart bodies, she was appropriately horrified, but not apparently grief stricken. Although she would have known these men her entire life, she nevertheless seemed to recover in mere hours. Death is a very large part of Red’s world, and she generally recovers quickly to its presence.

Another side effect of her village life is the urge for excitement; with her parents dead, and an over-protective grandmother always looking over her shoulder, Red generally felt as if she had been caught in a trap, a feeling her inner wolf quite possibly contributed to. The feeling made her rebellious, in mostly small ways. She wouldn’t wear her cloak unless expressly told to, she opened up the shutters at night for her boyfriend despite not being supposed to…

At times, the feeling of being trapped gives rise to recklessness – as seen when she convinced Snow to help her kill the wolf; fueled by the idea that her grandmother was only using it as an excuse to keep her away from Peter, her boyfriend, she decided they could kill it during the day when it slept. It didn’t matter that it had just killed an entire party of trained huntsmen, either – she threw herself into it completely, apparently believing she could pull it off where all others failed.

Regardless of her occasional rebellions, though, it is important to note that Red is – above all else – loyal to the people she cares about; and that she does love her grandmother. Even among all the arguing, Red did not choose to simply leave the town; although Peter outright offered to go with her, she instead chose the more dangerous path of hunting down the wolf, so that she could become a hero to the town and marry Peter on her own terms, without simply running away from the woman. Although that was undoubtedly (in part) the stubbornness she inherited from her grandmother, it was not the only example by far.

When she found out that Peter was a werewolf, she offered to tie him up and stay by his side, to work through it with him. When (in a later episode) Prince Charming was going in search of Snow, she willingly remained behind to fight off knights, so that he could escape; and whenever Snow needed her to battle, or to talk to, she was always there; showing up every month with a basket of goodies to share with her friend. She very much values friendship and family, perhaps due to having so little of it (thanks to the death of her mother when she was young.)

The Wolf’s personality, however, is distinct from Red’s at this point; so I would like to give it a paragraph as well. We know from story of her grandfather biting her grandmother that the wolf form can think for itself – it took out first the weapons used upon it, then the hunters itself; and, upon discovering Red’s grandmother (at the time just a little girl), purposefully marked her as his own.

Just as important, though, is the fact that Red didn’t do this – upon turning into a werewolf, she ate her bound boyfriend, despite the fact that she loved him as a human – despite the fact that he posed no threat to her chained up, and even despite the fact that he was calling her by name.

From future cameos, however, I predict that the wolf and Red’s personalities will both shift; later she seemed more confident and at peace with herself, easily and playfully teasing Snow, often with a smug smile on her face. The time they spent living by themselves in the woods – after fleeing the village, who would have killed her if they’d known she was the wolf – apparently helped her to gain a confidence in herself, that allowed her to shift from simple recklessness to true bravery, as when she faced down the nights, or scouted for Snow and the others.

Further, she seemed to gain some control of her wolf form – being able to slip her cloak back on, and return to human form of her own volition, and remember all that had transpired. As the wall between wolf and Red broke, however, so did the personality’s. Although red isn’t bloodthirsty, she stopped being horrified by death, taking it in stride when she had a piece of “Someone” on her face. She fairly growled in an argument, as well; and in part, her confidence may be attributed to the wild wolf that seemed to live partly inside of her.

She also became less trusting, though that may have been more about seeing her best friend hunted by Regina – as she complained of Snow’s willingness to trust the queen.

On the barge, Red will temporarily recede from human contact, still miserable over the killings, and worried that there might still hurt others. As she gets over it, she will attempt to show her sweeter, friendlier side, talking to wardens and inmates alike, and trying to see the best in people. As time goes on, she will learn to trust her instincts, and – depending on her experiences on the barge – may begin approaching her bargemates with more caution; however, overall, she will try to treat to do her best by every person on the barge, and will attempt to make a personal connection to her inmate in particular.

Although she will generally try a gentle approach, Red is a determined girl, and will not back away from any method if she sees the necessity.

History: Red grew up in a small town, with an oppressive grandmother, and no parents. Granny – AKA Widow Lucas – kept a very close eye, often calling Red in just to check up on her, and always trying to make her wear the red cloak she claimed would repel wolves. She was generally forbidden from spending any large amount of time with her boyfriend.

The most often used excuse was “wolfstime” – three days of the month in which a large wolf, about the size of a mall pony, would haunt the area in search of livestock or humans to eat.

It was after the first night of wolfstime that Red first met the fugitive Snow White, who had hidden in the chicken coop to escape the wolf’s howling, and who was in the process of stealing eggs for her breakfast. Snow apologized quickly, and Red made a point of offering the woman food and shelter, forming a quick bond with the woman (and actively inviting her to use a false name, in recognition of the fact that Snow had no reason to trust her yet. This despite the fact that Snow was technically the theif.)

It was during Snow White’s stay, on a trip to the well, that they found the remains of a hunting party that had gone off in search of the wolf; and in the aftermath, once they had gotten over the initial shock, that Snow questioned whether Red’s granny was merely using the wolf as an excuse to keep Red at home. Red’s solution was to hunt the wolf during the daylight, hopefully giving them an advantage over it, as it would hopefully be sleeping.

Red handled the tracking proper, convincing Snow to come with her with the threat of going alone otherwise; and despite the dangerousness of their mission, the two managed to amuse each other as Red showed off some of her tracking skills, the two chatting easily. The amusement ended abruptly, though, when they actually found the wolf’s footsteps – realizing that it would take several of a human’s strides to barely match that of the wolf. Even worse, they quickly realized that the pawprints blended with that of boots, the trail continuing on as that of a man; and most importantly yet, heading straight to her window, making them think the wolf must be none other than her boyfriend.

With Snow’s encouragement helping her to overcome her fear, Red approached Peter on the subject – convincing him of his alter ego, and offering to tie him up; she claimed she knew where to find rope; Peter recommended they use chains.

For the plan to work, Snow took Red’s place at home, wearing the cloak as a disguise, while Red prepared to settle in besides Peter; the subterfuge was discovered by Granny – but too late. She tells Snow that Red, not Peter is the werewolf – and that she has been since she was 13, having inherited it from her mother, and her grandparents before her. Although the power has faded with age, Granny is still able to track Red by scent.

Unfortunately, as they talk, Red has already changed; and while he screams for her to stop, the wolf tears him to pieces, still occupied with eating his corpse when the others arrive; hearing them, she even lunged at her grandmother and Snow, but was taken down by a silver tipped arrow fired from her grandma’s cross bow.

Rather than doing damage, the blow merely knocks Red out, allowing Snow to put Red’s cloak (apparently bought from a wizard) over the woman’s form; this suppresses the wolf, allowing Red to return to normal.

Unfortunately, the horrified girl – newly told of what she had done – was forced to flee the oncoming villagers; this is the last we know for certain from her, and where I will be apping her from. Considering this Snow seemed to have left her castle only recently, it is likely that she and Snow lived in the woods together for a time – learning to survive – before eventually going separate ways; and we know from future cameos that Red continued to track Snow down every month, bringing a basket of goodies and news from the outside world. She also gained some control of her inner wolf, allowing her to help Snow the queen by drawing on her wolf’s form.

It is possible she sought out Rumpelstiltskin’s help at some point, as she later directed Snow to him – and he is likely the “traveling wizard” that made her cloak to begin with.

Later, she would have been among the many put under the queen’s curse, and transferred to our world – her personality twisted, her confidence taken away, and what happy ending she had managed stripped with all the rest; but as she was apped before that, “Ruby” has yet to exist, and her alternate –alternate persona will probably not be making a appearance outside of select floods.

Sample Journal Entry: [5-10 sentences, 1st Person POV]
Is anyone there? [Red holds the communicator at an angle as she speaks into it, tapping gently at the screen. She still hadn’t figured out the magic that ran it.] I’m… everyone calls me Red. [She clutches the red cloak tighter about her shoulders as she says that.] I’d love to meet everyone.

http://sixwordstories.dreamwidth.org/68444176.html?thread=4299744016#cmt4299744016 is a sample of how she might interact with someone on the barge.

Sample RP: [3-5 paragraphs, 3rd Person POV]

Red tilted the cloak back, letting the hood fall about her shoulders, to free her hair; once she would have thrown it off entirely, without her grandmother about to protest. It had seemed just another part of her Grandmother’s loving prison. Now she couldn’t bring herself to let it go. Even with the sun high in the sky.

Besides, it was another full moon tonight; she could feel it running through her veins, now that she was more aware. Her tracking skills – always formidable –seemed heightened; and the more she listened, the more she felt she could hear; the rabbits moving through the woods, the birds rustling above. She could smell the dirt, the trees – even Snow, a few feet back; and the flecks blood on her own clothes. Peter’s blood.

She felt herself shut down, forcing herself to take a step forward; she would… wash the clothes; later. Right now Snow was depending on her to catch food. They’d starve otherwise; maybe she deserved that, but Snow didn’t.

She had to take another step; and another, drawing the bow as she listened for the telltale sound of a rabbit jumping. The tension snapped free, letting the arrow fly; she heard it thump, heard the rabbit’s heart – beating so fast it blurred slow to a halt and stop. She’d killed it.

At least, with her curse, they wouldn’t starve.

Special Notes:

Red’s real name and birthday are never spoken – 23 is an estimate, and Red is the nickname she always uses.

We know her mother was killed by a hunting party – though Red herself was not told so; her father is never mentioned.

Character's Canon Abilities: Red is a good tracker (though this may in part stem from being a werewolf, as she’s always been able to track down what she wants.)

Though the process has yet to be detailed, the “mark” of the bite is at least known – it scars created do not fade, and will always hurt on the full moon.

Some werewolf abilities come through even in her human form, during the time of the full moon – whether in day or night, and even if the curse is blocked. More specifically, Red has shown herself capable of accessing enhanced senses – allowing her to hear an unconscious man’s hearbeat as if it were “hammering.”

Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? I’d prefer it if Red had the potential to access her heightened senses, and wolfish form, during any time of the month – though she’d risk losing control any time she transformed, unless she learned how to control it. (The risk would be greatly reduced outside the full moon, however, as her human mind would not be entirely subverted by the wolf automatically.)

Weapons: Bow and arrows.

Point in Canon:After her episode – Red Handed – when she’s fleeing from the village.
Conditional: Brief summary of previous RP history:
Character Personality: Red is generally sweet, and willing to believe the best in others – as seen when she was willing to accept Snow’s fake name, realizing off the bat that the woman had no reason to trust her. She didn’t seem to mind that Snow had actually been stealing from her chicken coop, nor did she question the fact that the woman was clearly being chased down. She saw someone in need of help, and she offered it to them without reservation.

Part of this may have stemmed from the life she lived; growing up in a cottage, at the outskirts of a small town – relatively quiet outside of the wolf that hunted it every month – Red is used to a small selection of people who know each other, and who banded together in order to survive, like a pack. When seeing another in danger, her first thought was therefore not to question it, but to bond with this odd woman.

It would be unwise to mistake Red’s occasional naivety for simple innocence, however, or her kind approach to Snow as a universally gentle outlook. Red’s view of the world has been fundamentally affected by the wolf, both through its unknown presence inside of her, and its habit of haunting her town. For years – most lately with her, but from her mother and grandparents before her (and perhaps further back as well) – families have known to lock their doors and bring out their crossbows, watching helplessly as a creature ate the livestock that provided for their livelihoods.

When Red heard of a hunting party that wanted to take down the wolf, her first thought was to join them; and when she later found their bodies torn apart, and the well water turned red, she was appropriately horrified; but not apparently grief stricken. Although she knew these men her entire life – although they were, to her human half, pack - she nevertheless seemed to recover in mere hours from the ordeal. Death is a very large part of Red’s world, and its presence rarely keeps Red down.

Another side effect of her village life is the urge for excitement; with her parents dead, and an over-protective grandmother always looking over her shoulder, Red generally felt as if she had been caught in a trap, a feeling her inner wolf undoubtedly contributed to. The feeling made her rebellious, in mostly small ways – not quite upturning the houses hierarchy, but often testing. She wouldn’t wear her cloak unless expressly told to; she opened up the shutters at night for her boyfriend despite not being supposed to… yet told to put on the cloak, or come inside, she always ended up doing so.

Still, at times that feeling of being trapped gave rise to recklessness – as seen when she convinced Snow to help her kill the wolf; fueled by the idea that her grandmother was only using it as an excuse to keep her away from Peter, she decided they could kill it during the day when it slept.

The Wolf’s personality, however, is distinct from Red’s at this point, despite their similarities; so I would like to give it a paragraph as well.

Though Peter appealed to her human side, he did not apparently appeal to her wolf side, perhaps not being a dominant enough personality.

Yet as the wall between wolf and Red weakened, so did the wall between their personalities. Although Red isn’t bloodthirsty, she stopped being horrified by death, taking it in stride when she had a piece of “Someone” on her face. She fairly growled in an argument, as well; and in part, her confidence may be attributed to the wild wolf that always lives inside of her.

Red also became less trusting, though that may have been more about seeing her best friend hunted by Regina – as she complained of Snow’s willingness to trust the queen.

In the meantime, however, Red is still rather horrified by the discovery of her true nature. As willing as she was to separate Peter from the Wolf in her own mind, as much as she’s managed to think of it as a distinct entity, she is having a harder time taking that to heart in reference to herself. There’s a part of her that thinks she must be a monster.

As for her Granny, Red feels betrayed. Red remained with her grandmother out of loyalty – and, perhaps, because of the ingrained pack mentality that leaked over from her other half; she might rebel in certain ways, as discussed – but again, she never betrayed direct orders; never left the house when she knew granny would be mad; and she worked to stop the wolf, rather than sneak out under Granny’s nose. So finding out that her Grandmother had been keeping such a secret from her…

For now, it’s buried beneath the grief of having had to run; the homesickness; but beneath it all, there is a part of Red that feels betrayed by the lies that were told. That feels Granny broke the trust of their relationship.

Complicating that emotion, though, is the fact that she finally understands why they had the relationship they did. Previously, Red felt like a rat in a trap; she wanted to get out from under what she felt was her grandmother’s oppression – though she wasn’t willing to simply sneak away. After finding out, she claimed she didn’t want to go – at least, not like that; not chased out.

Finding out what she was… in a way, it confirmed things – her cloak really was a prison, her granny a warden; not her warden, but the wolf’s. This understanding, coupled with the way she was forced to flee home rather than leave it on her own terms, creates something of a longing for granny and cottage both, in conflict to the feelings of betrayal; she can not feel free of the trap, now that she knows its true nature.

Still, none of this will keep Red down; her future cameos revealed that she gained control of the wolf, became confident in her own power, and bonded more closely than ever with her grandmother. None of those things are guaranteed to happen in this setting, of course – particularly the latter – but they do confirm something about Red.

Just as how she wouldn’t allow the deaths of the villagers to get her down, or thinking Peter was the wolf to defeat her – she won’t let this take her out. She will be depressed; and hurt; and scared; but with support from friends, she will pull herself together, as she always has; in part because she refuses to be defeated, and in part because there is no other choice. She needs to learn how to control the wolf, or else there will only be more issues.

As a final note, it’s worth nothing that Red does love her grandmother; she was loyal to her grandmother; and that’s part of why she’ll feel betrayed. When she allowed Snow to give her a false name, it was paired with an understanding that Snow didn’t know her and had no reason to trust her; so an unwillingness was understandable. But from those she is close to, she expects a loyalty to match her own.

Conditional: Personality development in previous game:
Character Plans: Red would probably be most interested in reaching out to people, at first – she’ll want to develop a pack of sorts. She might at first be drawn towards one of the organizations – depending on who she meets first- but she wouldn’t stay with either for long past learning their darker habits.

I’d be interested in seeing her try her hands towards greeting, as she can be quite sweet – but the more she knows about the world, the more I fear she’ll start to withdraw; protecting her companions, while becoming wary of the rest, and perhaps working actively against both AGI and SERO if needed to protect her friends.

Although she will occasionally involve herself in the darkness – fighting monsters (again, generally to protect others she cares about), I see Red becoming more involved in the political side of things, probably against her will; much like her canon self.

[Red taps the book, biting her lip gently as she studies her NV. She almost drops it when she realizes it’s capturing her image. ] Some sort of spell…?

[She shakes her head, brushing a bit of hair behind her ear as she glances about.] Mary? Where are you? …Snow? Come look at this.

[There’s a worried pause while she looks around, followed by outright glaring at the book.] What did you do to Snow? …What did you do to me? This isn’t the enchanted forest. [This isn’t home.]

Hello? Is anyone there?

The basket swung easily from Red’s arm as she moved down the street, a small frown on her lips as she browed the shelves. A bottle of pepper, a bit of garlic… She swung the basket gently as she moved, scouting the shelves for anything else she might need, on the way to the meat. She had a big dinner planned. She picked up three.

She hummed faintly as she moved towards the checkout line; plucking up a few onions along the way, and paying for her goods at the counter. The wicker basket was a familiar weight on her arm, even laden down with modern food. She allowed it to swing a little more, glad to have something from home beyond her cloak – even if it did make her stand out among the citizens.

Outside, the light had dimmed rapidly during her shopping time. The sun was low in the sky, giving the clouds tinged orange. The siren would be sounding soon, and she found her feet moving faster towards the apartments, basket in hand. She heard the bottles clinking but didn’t pause, lips turned down in determination. As much as she hated being cooped in at night, she was hardly stupid enough to stay in place once the nightmares started coming.

The sirens came on; and she resisted the urge to curse, adding another loop to her step; she wasn’t far. If she was lucky, she wouldn’t even have to transform – useful, since the basket would be awkward to hold in her teeth. She didn’t think she’d be able to resist snapping up the meat.

The sound of a scream reached her oversensitive ears; two blocks in the wrong direction. She hesitated for only half a moment, before dropping the basket on the ground. Whatever was going to happen next, she would need to move quickly.

Character Information

General
Canon Source: Once Upon a Time
Canon Format: Television
Character's Name: Red
Character's Age: 23
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played.

What form will your character's NV take? A small black book, with a quill in the binder.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Red is a good tracker (though this may in part stem from being a werewolf, as she’s always been able to track down what she wants.)

Her status as a werewolf has a genetic component – she inherited it from her mother, and her grandparents before her – but she can also turn another; this is separate from a bite, which will merely mark them.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Red grew up in a small town, with an oppressive grandmother, and no parents. Granny – also known as Widow Lucas – kept a very close eye, occasionally calling Red in simply to check up on her, and always trying to make Red wear the red cloak Granny claimed would repel wolves. The young woman was generally forbidden from spending any large amount of time with her boyfriend, Peter.

The most often used excuse was “wolfstime” – three days of the month in which a large wolf, five feet tall and ten feet long, would haunt the area in search of livestock or humans to eat.

It was after the first night of wolfstime that month when Red first met the fugitive Snow White, who had hidden in the chicken coop to escape the wolf’s howling, and who was in the process of stealing eggs for her breakfast. Snow apologized quickly, and Red made a point of offering the woman food and shelter, forming a quick bond with the woman (and actively inviting her to use a false name, in recognition of the fact that Snow had no reason to trust her yet. This despite the fact that Snow was technically a thief.)

Later, she would have been among the many put under the queen’s curse, and transferred to our world – her personality twisted, her confidence taken away, and what happy ending she had managed stripped with all the rest; but as she was apped before that, “Ruby” has yet to exist, although some of the core personality traits are still in Red.

The Wolf’s personality, however, is distinct from Red’s at this point, despite their similarities; so I would like to give it a paragraph as well.

Though Peter appealed to her human side, he did not apparently appeal to her wolf side, perhaps not being a dominant enough personality.

Canon Character Section:
History: as Red, and as Ruby

Personality:
Red is generally sweet, and willing to believe the best in others – as seen when she was willing to accept Snow’s fake name, realizing off the bat that the woman had no reason to trust her. She didn’t seem to mind that Snow had actually been stealing from the chicken coop, nor did she question the fact that Snow was being chased. She saw that Snow was in need of help, and she offered it without reservation.

Part of that stemmed from the life Red lived. Growing up in a college, at the outskirts of a small town – relatively quiet outside of the wolf that hunted it every month – Red is used to a small selection of people who know each other and who band together in order to survive, much like a pack. When she sees another in trouble, her first thoughts are not to question it, but to bond.

Although she’s not always so trusting these days, some things have remained the same. While she has purported suspicion of both Regina and Rumpelstiltskin – for good reason – she showed no hesitation at all to take Belle in as a friend, post curse. Within hours she was even willing to lie for the woman. As with Snow, Red is as willing as ever to help someone in need.

It would be unwise to mistake Red’s occasional naivety for simple innocence, however, or her kind approach with Snow as a universally gentle outlook. Red’s view of the world has been fundamentally affected by the wolf, both through its unknown presence inside of her, and its habit of haunting her town. For generations, members of her town had to lock their doors and bring out their crossbows, hiding helplessly as a creature ate the livestock that provided for their livelihood.

When Red heard of a hunting party that intended to take down the wolf, her first thought was to join them; and when she later found their bodies torn apart, and the water turned red with blood, she was appropriately horrified; but not apparently grief stricken. Although she had known those men her entire life, it nevertheless took her mere hours to recover from the ordeal. Death is a very large part of Red’s world, and its presence rarely keeps her down for long.

Another side effect of her village life is the urge for excitement. Spending her days with an overprotective grandmother always looking over her shoulder, Red spent her days feeling like a rat in a trap; a feeling the wolf within her contributed to. That feeling made her rebellious, in mostly small ways. She never upturned the houses hierarchy, but often tested it. She wouldn’t wear her cloak unless expressively told to; she opened up the shutters at night for her boyfriend despite not being supposed to… yet when told to put on the cloak, or come inside, she always ended up doing so.

Still, that trapped feeling, mixed with youthful confidence, occasionally gives rise to reckless tendencies. Fueled by the idea that her grandmother was only using the wolf to keep her from Peter, Red actually convinced Snow to help her kill it. It didn’t matter to Red that it had killed an entire party of trained huntsman; she threw herself into the task completely all the same, honestly believing that simply attacking it during the day would allow her to succeed where all others had failed.

Regardless of her occasional rebellions, though, it’s important to note that Red is loyal the people she cares about, and that she does love her grandmother. Even amidst all the arguing, Red did not choose to simply run away with Peter. She instead chose the more dangerous route of hunting down the wolf, in hopes of becoming a hero and marrying Peter on her own terms – without simply running away from the woman.

Part of that was undoubtedly stubbornness, inherited from her grandmother; but it isn’t the only example of Red’s loyalty, or bravery. When she thought that Peter was the werewolf, after all, she offered to tie him up and stay by his side, to work through it alongside him. She did not and would not abandon him, any more than she would her grandmother.

An even better example can be seen in her latest episode, when her mother attempted to kill Snow. She stuck by her friend, and prevented it. In doing so, she showed loyalty not only to her friend, but her principles – she claimed that she had chosen neither the humans nor the wolf, but herself. She wasn’t a killer, and she wouldn’t be one even for her mother. …Ironic, considering her attempt to save Snow led to the accidental death of her own mother.

Further, I would like to make note of Ruby’s personality. With Red’s memories returned, she seems back to herself. That said, Ruby’s memories do remain a part of her. Current canon has implied that any removal or suppression of Red would leave Ruby behind again, making her worth discussing.

In several ways her personality was similar to Red’s. She showed loyalty to her friends – lying to Emma to protect Ashley, her friend. On top of that, she gave the woman her car to get away in – the key word being “gave.” Ashley was, after all, running to Boston in order to escape a deal she made with Mr. Gold. Being unable to return, she wouldn’t have been able to give back the car. That meant that Ruby herself would be unable to go to Boston, as she had often dreamed. Perhaps it was a moot point, with her needing to take care of her grandmother, but it was a sacrifice nonetheless.

She also maintained Red’s rebellious streak. Though she stayed with her strong-willed Granny, the two often clashed in arguments. She wore tight, sexual outfits, flirted with all the boys, and often went to clubs. It finally exploded when Ruby quit her job – and quieted upon her return.

Interestingly, the origins of their rebelliousness differed. Red rebelled due to feeling trapped by her Granny’s iron will; she wanted to feel free. In Ruby’s case, a large part of it seemed to be her own insecurities. When she returned to her Granny’s side, she admitted that she had been scared she couldn’t measure up to the older woman’s expectations. After that admittance, she dressed down somewhat and worked hard. The two were no longer seen arguing.

Ruby also lacked some of Red’s confidence, and adventurousness. Red wanted to escape the confines of the small village, with her boyfriend. As much as she loved her Granny, she did want to see the world. Ruby wanted it too, for a while – she wanted to travel and meet odd animals. She even helped Emma, the sheriff, in an investigation. However, upon being exposed to the gruesomeness of a human heart, she quickly decided that adventure was not for her.

Where Red saw mutilated bodies and recovered in hours, going on to try and hunt down a wolf, Ruby backed down upon her first exposure to the darker side of adventure. She didn’t want a job where a “good day” was ruining someone else’s life. It was a wonderful thought, from a sweet girl – but very different from Red, who would fight an army to protect her friend. When Mary went to prison, Ruby did nothing.

That isn’t to say that she felt no loyalty to her friend. But Ruby and Red differ in their desires. At the end of the day, Ruby was honestly content to be a small town waiter with her Granny, and to take over the diner one day. Adventure was something to dream about, a way to avoid responsibilities she was scared of. Not something she truly thirsted for.

As for the wolf… Red’s relationship to it has varied over time. Originally, she saw it as a beast, something that couldn’t be controlled. That evil thing which had terrorized the town, in essence – separate from her. Though, for a while, she still saw it as a taint that spread to her. She blamed herself for Peter’s death, and wondered why Snow would ever help her.

That started to change when she met her mother, Anita. Her mother was the one who taught her to embrace the wolf, that if she accepted it as a part of herself she could maintain control of it. In essence, that the only reason for her struggle was her unwillingness to accept that part of herself. She did it, much more than Anita planned. With Snow’s support, Red accepted that she was a human and a wolf, not just one or the other.

That isn’t to say it’s been smooth sailing since, though. The fear of losing control, and harming someone, still exists. She was scared of harming someone after the curse ended, a result of being out of practice. Although she didn’t harm anyone, she didn’t trust herself either, and she did lose control – not remembering the night before. With the support of Charming and Belle, she managed to embrace the wolf anew, gain control – and enjoy it. She expressed a love for running in her canine form, and went out to enjoy what remained of the full moon.

The fact of the matter is, while there’s a part of Red – fueled by grief past – that still fears what her wolf side can do, Red has by and large accepted her other half. With the support of those around her, she has renewed her embrace of it. The fear might be there but like the wolf, it’s under control.

As for the game setting itself, Red’s reaction to it should be interesting. She will adapt to the situation, as she has in the past – as she did when she was chased out of town, and as she did when she found herself in Storybrooke, post curse. She’ll do the work, she’ll interact with others, and basically she’ll survive.

That being said, she won’t exactly be content. She won’t appreciate feeling trapped, and she will occasionally press against the control.

So long as she feels other people are depending on her, though, she’ll even be a pretty good Worker.  She won't want to let others come to harm. Still, she’ll maintain a steady anger against the people who brought her there (in much the same way she was angry at the wolf, before she knew it was her.) If she sees a chance to fight back, she might take it. If she sees her job as less than important, she might occasionally shirk it, while looking for some other way to get home.

This is more a result of feeling trapped, than disagreeing about the crimes – although she doesn’t see eye to eye to her “captors” on punishment. What she did when she wasn’t in control, she still feels sorry for. She showed that much in her misery over Billy. All the same, she’s learned  to accept that it wasn’t her fault. She’s moved on, and she’s trying to make up for it by doing her best.

As for the soldiers she killed – she’s never shown any regret for what she did there. She’ll do anything for her friends, and enemies (particularly faceless soldiers) are just people to take down. That isn’t to say she’ll murder them outright. She’s never tried to kill Regina, or Rumpelstiltskin. But just as Granny had no issue firing her crossbow at the queen, Red has no issue taking down threats. It’s not something she needs to make up for, in her opinion. Even her mother’s death, while accidental, is something she’d do all over again to save her friend.

More to the point, she doesn’t see this as making up for anything. It’s not going to bring them back to life. It’s not that much different than what she was doing at home –except here, she’s powerless and of no help to her friends. She’s won’t be happy with the situation. But she will do what she needs to, and she will add to the “community.” She just can’t help trying to adopt those who need her, as both Snow and Belle can attest.

What she really asks for in return, to build true friendship, is acceptance. Neither her mother or her Granny have ever accepted her, after all – even in this latest episode, Granny was the only person who never tried to convince Red she was innocent. She was all too willing to lock the wolf into a cage, a sign that she still hadn’t accepted Red as both. It makes sense, considering she couldn’t accept her own daughter, either – most likely due to the way Red’s grandfather supposedly killed the rest of Granny’s family.

While it’s apparent that they’ve managed to form closeness despite it all, Red still values the acceptance of her friends. That acceptance of her is what made Snow family. Getting it here, from others who have been branded with “crimes,” will help her to find more in game.

Powers/Abilties:
- Red is a good tracker – and woods woman. It’s implied that she taught Snow how to survive I the forests.
- She is skilled with a bow and arrow. Although she is never seen shooting, she did carry one when hunting the wolf.
- She is capable of hand to hand combat.
-Supernatural Powers: Red is a werewolf, changing only at the full moon, and the two days surrounding it. Her wolf form stands at about five feet tall, and she is about ten feet long from snout to bottom, excluding tail. They note that it takes several human footsteps to match one of her strides.

-Atop of that, she had excessive speed and strength. She was capable of jumping over a large crevice, and she took down the door of a restaurant refrigerator, actively remade into a cage.

-Her transformation is very extensive, including the disappearance and reappearance of her clothing.

-Her status as a werewolf has a genetic component – she inherited it from her mother, and her grandparents before her – but she can also turn another; this is separate from a bite, which will merely mark them. Though the process has yet to be detailed, the “mark” of the bite is at least known – it scars created do not fade, and will always hurt on the full moon, at least if you go by Granny’s claim when under the curse.

-Though it is possible to kill the wolf with human weapons, it appears to take great effort; silver in particularly is useful, for its ability to knock the wolf out – although it leaves no wounds upon the wolf (as seen when she was struck at close range with a cross bow bolt, but showed no wounds upon returning to normal.)

-It is worth noting that in Storybrooke, with the differences in magic, Red’s powers were slightly different. Namely, she gained wolf senses, such as smell and hearing. She could track by scent, and hear the heartbeat of an unconscious man from twenty feet away. To her, it sounded like “hammering.” (I will rely upon the discretion of the mods as to whether she would maintain this ability in the game, or lose it with the transition.)

Appearance: Played by Meghan Ory, Red stands at five foot eight, with dark brown hair trailing down to the waist, and bright green eyes. Her skin is pale, made to look more so by the coloring of hair.

[Red taps at the bracelet, still not entirely certain it'll work. She's guessing it's magic.]

...Can anyone hear me?

I guess you could say we've all been sort of kidnapped. Or stolen, anyway. Last thing I remember I was running through the forest back in... Storybrooke. [Another place she'd been kidnapped to.]

Starting to think I might have to get used to it... The kidnapping, I mean, not the running. Or the forest. I'm... I'm pretty used to forests. [And she's babbling. Bad nervous habit.]

Can anyone tell me where "here" is, exactly? Or where they were before they got here? [Maybe there's a way back. Or at least some figure responsible.]

Also: here, and here

Prose Sample: The floor disappeared beneath the wolf’s paws, crushed leaves releasing their scent as she danced past. The musk of prey assaulted her as she ran, squirrels and rabbits and deer; smaller wolves. She could hear their heartbeats thudding as they caught her scent, enticing her to chase after them.

She gave in willingly, tearing through the earth as she bounded forward, their smaller legs no match for her speed. She spied a rabbit, but didn’t bite it, passing it for a deer that ran in fear. Red kept abreast with it easily – and veered to the right, not needing the food so much as the hunt. The run which let the wind swirl through her fur as her head tilted back and cried to the full moon. This was what being a wolf was about. Better – being a human and a wolf.

There was another cry in the night, another wolf – though not one that was human. She moved towards it, howling out her own cry of greeting to her little cousin as she thudded through the trees. Branches scraped at her flanks as she moved, wood snapping easily against her strong hide. Nothing could contain her, like this. She was free.

Eventually the moon began to drop, though. Reluctantly she turned about, calling out to the other wolves and leaving prey behind. Running quickly, she moved back towards the village. Again the scents assaulted her, and again she took them in, knowing it would be the last time for the night. Not caring, though, so long as she could enjoy their scents upon the wind for a few hours more.

She was the wolf, but she was also human. She looked forward to coming back, to seeing Snow and Charming in the morning.  To hugging her friend close as she talked about her run. There would always be another night to move beneath the moon – she cherished them, but she wouldn’t give up her humanity for it. She loved it because she could have both.

Putting on another burst of speed, she watched the moonlight dwindle until the sun began to emerge and sleep claimed her. She felt herself shift back to human, the pine needles beneath her feet, and yawned as she fell to dreams.

In the morning she stretched, running hands through her hair to get rid of the pine needles. A small smile lit her face. Without hesitation, she moved towards the village, ready to find her friends.
